Notary Public

The Crystal Lake Public Library provides the services of a Notary Public on a walk-in basis for CLPL cardholders only. Hours are Monday-Friday, 10 am-4 pm.

Before Your Appointment:

  • Be sure to review all the terms and requirements outlined in your document thoroughly
  • Ensure if your document requires witnesses, that they meet the requirements outlined in the document’s clauses. Witnesses cannot be recruited from library staff or patrons.
  • Complete all fields in your document except for the signature panel

What to Bring to Your Appointment:

  • Current, valid ID issued by a U.S. state or the U.S. Federal Government and bearing the photographic image of the individual’s face and signature of the individual, including: driver’s license, state ID card, military ID or U.S. Passport
  • Completed document (all pages) with all applicable blanks filled out except the signature/date panel
  • Any required witnesses – library staff cannot serve as witnesses, and you may not solicit library patrons to be witnesses

We CANNOT Notarize the Following:

  • Documents conveying real estate
  • Wills or trusts
  • Apostilles
  • Depositions
  • Documents not in English language (Exception: for Spanish notarization please call ahead to make sure a Spanish speaking notary is available)
  • Visa or immigration paperwork
  • County Documents (vital records, marriage and divorce records, citizenship and naturalization documents)
  • A “certified copy” (verification of a copy of an original document)
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification forms

Library Notaries Will:

  • Adhere to Illinois notary laws
  • Verify the signature of your document, NOT the content
  • Take an oath/affirmation if the notarial act requested on the document requires same
  • NOT be permitted to use the services of a translator to communicate with a notarial services patron

Crystal Lake Public Library notaries are not attorneys licensed to practice law in Illinois. They are not allowed to draft legal documents or records, nor may they give advice on any matter. The library notary may, at their sole discretion, decline to provide notary service.
